How to Design an App for the Real World
Overview
Donaldson Filtration is a powerhouse, providing solutions that keep industries running smoothly, from agriculture to aerospace. We partnered with them to create an IoT app that tracks the filtration health of connected equipment.
No Kid Gloves Here
When you're designing an app for people working outside, wearing gloves, or dealing with real-world grime, polish alone won't cut it—you have to build for context.
The sensors do the hard work of tracking filtration levels, but it’s the app that keeps everything clear and actionable. We designed the interface to be bold, direct, and easy to read in bright sunlight or dark garages, where the work is happening. Big buttons, minimal text, and high-contrast visuals make it usable whether you’re squinting at it midday or poking at it with a greasy thumb.
Now You See Me
We also kept language in mind. Since many users aren’t native English speakers, we focused on iconography, simplified phrasing, and built the structure to support multiple languages down the road. From field use to finger smudges, we designed for the messiness of reality—not just the prettiness of prototypes.
